PRETTY ON THE OUTSIDE, DYING ON THE INSIDE
Beauty products have never been my “thing.” I’m not girly….I make an excuse to wear a sweatshirt, yoga pants, and tennis shoes, as much as possible. Trust me, I’ve tried to jump onto the beauty band wagon. I get on board, ride for a few stops, and then walk (or fall) off. I’ve bought Mary Kay, gone to the mall and had professionals find that perfect combination for my skin, used the most AND least expensive items, ect……it never sticks. There are two main reason why I haven’t consistently used beauty products, in the past:
1. I’m HORRIBLE at sticking to a “beauty routine”
2. Beauty Products irritate the CRAP out of my skin
The irritation is definitely the largest factor. All my life I have had allergic reactions to a variety of products. My skin is VERY sensitive! Even a light touch of certain items can cause an extreme breakout. I swell, get hives, sneeze, have watery eyes, develop acne, and so on. Unfortunately, now that I 30 (How in the world?!), wrinkles, dark circles, lines, bumps, and every other horrible downfall of aging, is starting to show up. At this point, I have two choice:
1. Continue to age and do nothing about it
2. Try to get a beauty regimen that will (hopefully) slow down my aging, as opposed to speed it up.
I opted for choice #2 and began my investigation for the best products that would be safe, effective, and not cause a negative reaction to my body.
WHAT YOUR COSMETIC LABEL IS NOT TELLING YOU
After researching, I understand why I have such bad reactions to store bought beauty products….they are TOXIC!!! Some of the main ingredients have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, organ toxicity, skin irritation, and more. Below is a list of some of the most used chemicals in today’s skin, hair, and nail products, as well as the harmful effects they potentially have on your body.
The list above includes only seven KNOWN ingredients used in most popular beauty and self-care products. Another bit of important information to be aware of is that the industry often will try to confuse(and trick) consumers. Companies label harsh chemicals by SEVERAL other names. For instance, “parabens” on your product’s ingredient list can also show up as:
Changing names is a common practice with hundreds of other chemicals. The above list is a reminder: Even though that scary ingredient you were told about is not specifically listed, you’re not in the clear. It may be disguised with another name.
Unfortunately, thousands of chemicals allowed in our products have never been researched. According to the Natural Resource Defense Council, currently, there are 80,000 synthetic chemicals not thoroughly tested. Especially in the United States, the cosmetic industry panel has reviewed only 11% of the 10, 500 cosmetic ingredients cataloged by the FDA. This means that the FDA allows these chemicals to be used in products, without them being reviewed for safety. This is a reason to be concerned for our health.
Another disturbing fact involves the lack of restrictions in the United States. The European Health Commission prohibits 1,300 chemicals, shown to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive problems, and birth defects, for use in cosmetic products (European Prohibited Cosmetic List). The United States ONLY bans 11 of these same chemicals(United States Prohibited Cosmetic List). This information terrifies me when it comes to my family’s health and safety. How is this possible? Why would our country not choose to do the same? Think of it this way…….if we were to move to a European country for a MONTH and buy/use products off their shelves, we could come home an overall healthier person. It would potentially prevent us from being exposed to hundreds of dangerous, poisonous chemicals.
The label shown is a VERY popular lotion, bought daily, in the United States. You think you would be able to research each particular ingredient, right? If only our country required companies to be that honest. One example of this is to look at the ingredient, FRAGRANCE (Parfum). What makes a fragrance? Well, truthfully, no one but the company(and those they are required to inform) knows. Fragrances are considered “trade secrets.” Manufacturers aren’t required to disclose specific fragrance ingredients on product labels. Instead, the generic term, Parfum, is listed. This term alone can represent a mixture of potentially DOZENS of dangerous chemicals.

I’m sure one of your top priorities in life is to safeguard yourself and your loved ones. Everyone, especially children and elders, are vulnerable to the toxins in beauty/cosmetic products.
